Ira B. Mirsky* is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP and is based in the Firm’s Washington, D.C., office.  Ira focuses his practice on tax controversy matters related to employee compensation, fringe and welfare benefits, deferred compensation arrangements, and employment tax and information reporting issues in general. 

Ira is significantly involved in IRS examination and tax due diligence matters involving:  executive compensation and fringe benefit issues; worker classification issues; tax information reporting issues in connection with financial institutions, vendors, and qualified retirement plans; administrative and compliance matters related to tax-qualified retirement and welfare benefit programs; and penalty and interest matters in connection with the reporting, withholding, and deposit of employment taxes. 

Prior to joining McDermott, Ira served as a senior manager in the Tax Controversy and Risk Management Services Group, in the National Office of a Big Four accounting firm.  He represented clients in controversy proceedings before the IRS on matters related to employee compensation, fringe and welfare benefit arrangements, tax-qualified and nonqualified retirement plans, and all areas of U.S. tax information reporting and withholding.  He successfully settled cases, both at IRS Examination and Appeals levels, related to these matters. 

Ira is admitted to practice in the states of Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and before the Third Circuit Court of Appeals and U.S. Tax Court.  He is a member of the American Bar Association and Federal Bar Association Tax Sections, and serves as the manager of a low-income taxpayer clinic for Community Tax Aid, Inc. in Washington, D.C.
