Matthew E. Leno is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP and is based in the Firm's Boston office.  He focuses his practice on litigation, patent and trademark prosecution, counseling and transactions.

Matthew’s experience includes work in the chemical, mechanical and software fields, and representing clients in such diverse areas as cell phone technology, information filtering technology, data systems, chemical processing, consumer packaging, surgical products, tracking systems and attorney malpractice.

Matthew holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.  He is admitted to practice in Massachusetts and before the U.S. District Courts for Massachusetts and the Northern District of Illinois as well as the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.  He is also registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Prior to becoming an attorney, Matthew served two years as a patent examiner for the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

  • Defended major University in inventorship dispute for pharmaceutical patent.
  • Represented medical product manufacturer in asserting patents concerning pulmonary testing equipment
  • Defended major lighting and signage manufacturer against patent infringement allegations
  • Defended major plastic bottle manufacturer against allegations of patent infringement
  • Enforced patents covering chemical composition of aerial fire retardant for wildfire management
  • Enforced patents covering software for tracking and sorting of mail
  • Defended major apparel manufacturer against patent infringement claims
  • Defended national firm in attorney malpractice action for alleged breach of duty to pay patent maintenance fees
  • Led intellectual property harvesting programs for various major manufacturers
