Carla A. R. Hine is an associate in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP and is based in the Firm's Washington, D.C., office. She focuses her practice on antitrust and privacy regulatory matters.
In her antitrust practice, Carla has significant experience counseling clients on matters relating to mergers and acquisitions and compliance with the Hart-Scott-Rodino Act and international merger notification regimes. She defends mergers and acquisitions before the U.S. antitrust agencies and various international competition authorities. Her antitrust practice also includes counseling, government investigations, and antitrust litigation.
Carla has experience in a variety of industries, including consumer products (e.g., candy, pet food and sporting goods), defense, energy commodities, hospitals, gasoline and oil products, metal products (e.g., aluminum and steel), pharmaceuticals, sports teams, among others.
Prior to joining the Firm, Carla worked as a research analyst in the economics arena, where she prepared research and analysis for antitrust litigation and counseling matters, frequently involving Fortune 500 companies.
In her privacy practice, Carla regularly advises companies on federal data privacy and information security laws. She assesses clients' privacy and data security practices, and counsels clients on their regulatory compliance obligations and responding to Federal Trade Commission investigations into data privacy and security practices.
Carla is actively involved in the American Bar Association's Section of Antitrust Law, and serves as the 2010-2011 Young Lawyer Representative to the Privacy and Information Security Committee, as well as the 2010-2011 Vice Chair of the Young Lawyers Division-Antitrust Law Committee. She frequently writes and speaks on antitrust and privacy issues, and has contributed to 2009 and 2010 updates to the ABA's Antitrust Law Developments treatise, the 2010 updates to the ABA's Consumer Protection Law Developments treatise, and the ABA's Best Practices in the Acquisition of a Government Contractor.
Carla also served as a legal intern to the Honorable Steven D. Pepe of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.
While in law school, Carla interned with the Department of Justice, Antitrust Division. Carla served as editor for the 2003 National Symposium Editorial Board of the Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy. Also, she received Honorable Mention in an annual intellectual property writing competition.
Carla is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia and Illinois.
