Amol Parikh is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP and is based in the Firm’s Chicago office.  He concentrates his practice on intellectual property litigation, counseling and procurement. Amol’s trial and litigation experience in combination with his engineering training allow him to quickly identify intellectual property issues and develop creative strategies to address those issues.  Amol has been recognized by Law & Politics as an Illinois Rising Star in Intellectual Property in 2011 and 2012. 

Amol has represented high-tech companies in complex patent litigations throughout the country in a variety of technologies, including wireless communications, semiconductor chip packaging, high-resolution liquid crystal display projectors, computer and networking systems, mechanical devices and business methods. 

In addition to his litigation experience, Amol regularly prepares and prosecutes patent applications in the field of electronic and computer technologies, including digital and analog circuits, telecommunications systems, computer software and hardware, voice recognition and recordation software, semiconductor devices, artificial intelligence, medical devices, business methods and financial products.  Amol is also experienced in conducting inter partes and ex parte reexamination proceedings before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Amol’s practice also includes intellectual property asset management.  Amol has experience performing due diligence investigations, providing counseling, and rendering opinions in connection with the sale or acquisition of businesses or targeted business assets involving various technologies, including video conferencing, renewable energy sources, medical devices, and CDMA and W-CDMA wireless communication technologies.  Amol also has experience in client counseling, opinion work, licensing, and confidentiality agreements.

During law school, Amol served as a judicial extern for the Honorable Amy J. St. Eve, District Judge of the Northern District of Illinois and worked as a technical specialist for a full-service intellectual property law firm in Chicago.  Prior to attending law school, he held various positions with Hughes Network Systems working in design and development of telecommunication systems.

Amol earned his J.D. from DePaul University College of Law and his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University.  During law school, he was a member of the DePaul Law Review. 

Amol’s professional affiliations include the Illinois State Bar Association, the Chicago Bar Association, the Intellectual Property Law Association of Chicago and the Indian-American Bar Association of Chicago.  Amol is a member of the Young Professionals of Chicago and previously served a term on the Associate Board of Ambassadors for the American Cancer Society.

Amol is admitted to practice in Illinois and before the Supreme Court of the State of Illinois, the Northern District of Illinois and numerous other Federal Courts.  Amol is admitted to the Trial Bar of the Northern District of Illinois and is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

  • Trial counsel for plaintiff in a multi-patent case against a computer networking industry competitor, resulting in a favorable jury verdict, permanent injunction and order to destroy defendant’s infringing product inventory (W.D. Wis.)

  • Representing leading power tool manufacturer sued by competitor for patent infringement involving lithium-ion batteries (E.D. Wis.)
  • Representing prominent telecommunications equipment provider sued by non-practicing entity for patent infringement relating to optical switching technology (Del.)
  • Defended multinational financial services company sued by non-practicing entity for patent infringement concerning cash rebate credit cards, resulting in favorable settlement on the eve of trial (E.D. Tex.)
  • Defended electronics company sued by non-practicing entity for patent infringement involving lighting control systems, resulting in favorable settlement (E.D. Tex.)
