Joel M. Freed is an experienced IP litigation lawyer and partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP and is based in the Firm’s Washington, D.C., office. He focuses his practice on significant intellectual property and related antitrust disputes. Joel also is experienced in licensing and patent related transactions in the many fields of technology, including computers, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology.
Joel was recognized in the 2009, 2010 and 2011 editions of Chambers USA as a first tier leading lawyer in Intellectual Property in Washington, D.C. based on client interviews and peer reviews. He also has been recognized by PLC Which Lawyer? Yearbook as a leading lawyer in his field. Joel has been continuously recognized since 1993 in all editions of The Best Lawyers in America for intellectual property, and The Legal 500 United States 2009 and 2011 editions have ranked him as a leader in the field of patent litigation involving hi-tech electronics/IT. Joel has more than 40 years of intellectual property experience. He has served as lead counsel in a wide range of high technology cases involving patent infringement and trade secret disputes, as well as trademark litigation matters. In addition, he has appeared before the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in review of lower court decisions in a range of technologies. Joel also handles cases before the International Trade Commission and practices before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
Additionally, Joel was a former patent examiner and served as an outside instructor in Legal Methods at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Joel is an adjunct professor at Georgetown University Law Center, where he has lectured on intellectual property law for over 35 years.
Joel earned his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center and received a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering and a bachelor of arts degree from Lehigh University. While in law school, Joel served as staff editor of the Georgetown University Law Journal.
Joel is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia and Virginia, and is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
