Hugh Nineham is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery UK LLP, based in its London office.  He is head of the London office and the firm’s European Corporate Practice.  His practice focuses on mergers and acquisitions, both public and private.  Hugh has advised many UK based and other multinational corporations and institutions on transactional and securities law matters.  He has practised in New York and Hong Kong as well as in the UK. 

Hugh is recognised as a leading practitioner by both Chambers UK 2010 ('vastly experienced member of the UK corporate finance community') and Legal 500.

Representative Experience

  • Advising Temasek on its equity investment in Barclays PLC
  • Advising ITV PLC on a number of transactions, including its merger with Compass Group and the subsequent reorganisation and demerger of the combined group, its acquisition of the television interests of United News & Media, its merger with Carlton Communications and its proposed takeover by NTL
  • Advising Barclays Bank on a range of transactions, including its recommended takeover of Woolwich, its acquisition of Gerrard and the sale of BZW and of its Monument credit card business
  • Advising Standard Chartered on its acquisition of Union Bank of Pakistan
  • Advising Lloyds TSB on the sale of its Goldfish credit card business to Morgan Stanley
  • Advising Egg PLC in relation to the takeover offer by Prudential
  • Advising J. Aron & Co (Goldman Sachs) on the acquisition of the international commodities business of Constellation Energy

Between 1985 and 1990, Hugh was resident in Hong Kong and the head of the Asia Corporate Practice of another major international law firm.  His work focused on the corporate, securities and infrastructure areas.  Transactions included:

  • Advising contractors and equity investors in relation to their investments in the Eastern Harbour Crossing Project
  • Advising New World Development Group and China Resources in relation to their investments in Tates Cain Tunnel
  • Advising New World Development Group on the development of the HK Convention Centre and the disposal of the Grand Hyatt Hotel
  • Advising China Resources in relation to its investment in Hong Kong International Terminals
  • Advising Continental Insurance Group in relation to its sale of Lombard Insurance to Jardine Matheson
