Ira J. Rappeport is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP and resident in the Firm’s Los Angeles office.   Ira concentrates his practice on mergers, acquisitions, affiliations, joint ventures and divestitures. 

His practice involves numerous issues relating to acquisitions, divestitures, the formation of joint ventures and other affiliations, including issues related to new corporate structures, organization and operation of for-profit and not-for-profit organizations, partnerships and LLCs.  Ira’s more than 30 years of experience includes representation of both for-profit and nonprofit clients.

Ira has developed a particular expertise in representing health systems, as well as other entities (whether in the healthcare or in other industries), in the acquisition and divestiture of businesses and business lines.  Such transactions include asset transfers, stock transactions, merger transactions and other affiliation transactions.  Ira has been lead counsel on high-profile, multi-facility acute care hospital acquisition and divestiture transactions (both nationally and regionally), as well as a variety of smaller transactions designed to address the strategic positioning needs of clients.

Ira's unique focus on mergers and acquisitions in the healthcare industry has given him important knowledge and skill that is critical to the successful negotiation, documentation and closing of health industry transactions, including his ability to advise clients on the current trends and customs in health industry transactions.   

Ira is a member of the American Health Lawyers Association, the California Society for Healthcare Attorneys, the Healthcare Law Section of the Los Angeles County Bar Association, and the Beverly Hills and Century City bar associations.

Ira was named as a Client Service All-Star by the BTI Consulting Group in its publication, The BTI Client Service All-Star Team for Law Firms 2010.  In the 2011 edition of Chambers USA:  America’s Leading Lawyers for Business, Ira was recognized among top healthcare lawyers in California for the fifth consecutive year. 

Chambers USA 2011 stated:  In Los Angeles, Ira is regarded by some as "the best transactional lawyer in the business".  He was described by Chambers USA 2008 as a “transactional healthcare expert, [with] particular expertise in M&A.”  Chambers USA 2007 said,“an extremely experienced healthcare attorney with a ‘fine reputation,’

Ira is ‘an outstanding transactional specialist’ with more than 700 deals to his name.”   Ira is recognized as one of the leading health care lawyers in Best Lawyers in America (2009, 2010, 2011).  He was also recognized as one of Nightingale’s Healthcare News’ Outstanding Healthcare Transaction Lawyers.  Ira has recently been recognize as one of the leading health care lawyers in The Legal 500 (2011).   

Ira was a faculty member of the Governance Institute, an organization serving not-for-profit hospital and health system leadership by providing healthcare governance information and education.   He is a former speaker for the American College of Healthcare Executives, where he presented on joint ventures and other novel healthcare transaction structures.
