Claire Murray is an associate in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery UK LLP, based in its London office. Claire has extensive experience advising individuals, beneficiaries and offshore trustees on a variety of estate, trust and UK tax and compliance issues. She advises clients on integrated international tax planning and structuring, including inheritance and estate planning, and on migration planning including advice on residence, domicile and double tax treaty issues.

Currently a student member of the Society of Trusts and Estates Practitioners, Claire has previously acted as secretary of the Capital Taxes sub-committee of the Chartered Institute of Taxation. She has presented at seminars on UK estate planning and pre-migration planning.

Claire has written articles on a variety of trust and tax issues most recently co-authoring the cross-border chapter in the PLC Private Client Cross Border Handbook 2009/10 with Martyn Gowar, and an article in the Trusts and Estate supplement of the New York Law Journal with Henry Christensen III. She has been named in the 2010 Citywealth Leading Lawyers list in the ‘Up and Coming’ category and was runner-up in the Citywealth Tomorrow Club Woman of the Year 2010.

Representative Experience

  • Advising on UK residence and domicile issues for short- and long-term visitors to the UK including pre-emigration and pre-migration planning
  • Advising on the new rules relating to the remittance basis of taxation and how these affect new and existing tax planning
  • Advising on and drafting various forms of international trust deeds and related trust documents
  • Advising trustees, settlors and beneficiaries on trust and tax matters relating to the establishment and administration of offshore structures and the funding of beneficiaries in the UK and other jurisdictions
