Judith L. Toffenetti, Ph.D. is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP and is based in the Firm's Washington, D.C. office.  She is focuses her practice on life sciences and biotechnology, with particular emphasis on patent prosecution, licensing and strategic client counseling.

Judith's clients represent established as well as emerging pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, research institutes and universities.  Judith has extensive experience in client counseling concerning patent portfolio management and strategy in technology areas including small molecule therapies, genomics, gene therapy, anti-cancer therapies, molecular biology, immunology and pharmaceutical formulations.  She regularly counsels clients on various issues in the pharmaceutical, biotech, chemical, plant molecular biology and medical device industries, including counseling on scope, enforceability and transfer of intellectual property rights.  Judith also has extensive experience in drafting and negotiating a broad range of pharmaceutical and biotechnology-based transactions, including licensing, collaborative agreements and other intellectual property-related business transactions.

Judith has published papers in Cell Biology, Neurobiology, Nucleic Acids Research and Molecular Biology of the Retina  and BioPharm and has published a chapter on intellectual property law in the American Lawyers Association book entitled “Fundamentals of Life Sciences Law: Drugs, Devices and Biotech.”

Judith received a bachelor’s degree in biology and a Ph.D. in microbial molecular biology.  Upon completion of her Ph.D., Judith was a post-doctoral fellow at M.I.T., where she conducted research in the molecular biology of Drosophila myogenesis.  From 1985 until 1990, Judith conducted molecular genetics research in the area of retinal degeneration at the Eye Institute of the National Institutes of Health.

Judith is admitted to practice in Maryland and the District of Columbia and before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
