Karen S. Sealander is legislative counsel in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP and is based in the Firm’s Washington, D.C. office.   A member of the Firm’s Government Strategies practice, Karen has more than two decades of experience representing and counseling health care providers, health insurance plans, integrated health care delivery systems, professional associations of health care providers and others in the health sector on legislative, regulatory and legal matters.  She worked extensively on the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, legislation enacted in March 2010 which reformed the nation’s health care delivery system.

Karen is a registered lobbyist who is well-versed in both the politics and the process of federal health policy.   She regularly represents clients before Congress, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and other federal agencies.  Karen has particular knowledge in matters relating to non-physician providers.  She has presented to the National Commission on Allied Health and to the Institute of Medicine Committee on the Future of Dental Education.  Karen has also testified before the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging.

Karen has extensive experience formulating and implementing legislative, regulatory, and public relations strategies designed to achieve clients’ objectives.  She regularly plans and coordinates Government Days on Capitol Hill, drafts written comments to federal agencies, prepares testimony and witnesses for congressional committee hearings, assesses congressional and Executive Branch developments of potential impact, meets with congressional and administration officials, coordinates coalition activities, among other services.

Karen serves on the Advisory Council of the Capital Breast Care Center, the only community-based breast cancer screening clinic in the Washington metropolitan area that provides screening and navigation services to women, regardless of their ability to pay.   Karen is Co-Chair of the Parents of Alumnae Council of the National Cathedral School and she is a member of the University of Virginia Parents Committee.

Karen was a member of the Law Review at George Washington University Law School.  She is a member of the District of Columbia Bar Association.
