Justin Hill, Ph.D. is Head of IP Prosecution, in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery UK LLP based in the London office. He focuses his practice on broad range of IP matters, covering the procurement, exploitation and enforcement of IP rights including patents, designs, trade marks and trade secrets.
These activities include the preparation and prosecution of British, European and International patent, design and trade mark applications. Justin assists sophisticated technology clients with portfolio strategy and exploitation. He also deals with infringement and validity opinions, as well as opposition and appeal proceedings before the European Patent Office. Justin spends a considerable amount of time in patent litigation matters before the English courts.
Specialist practice areas include electronics, computer implemented inventions in any field of technology, software applications, telecoms, including mobile and optical communications, and business method patents. Justin also advises on mechanical, chemical and, increasingly on life sciences issues.
Justin is a European patent attorney, a chartered patent attorney and a chartered physicist. He is also a member of the Institute of Professional Representatives Before the European Patent Office, the Chartered Institute of Patent Agents, Institute of Physics and serves on the Special Advisory Committee for Computer Implemented Inventions. Justin is recommended in the Legal 500 2009 as being "extremely impressive", "one of the pre-eminent patent prosecution attorneys in the EU, with a phenomenal grasp of even the most complex and obscure patent issues".

Experience with worldwide IP disputes regarding the popular MP3 technology and related technology standards
- Representing one of Japan’s largest technology companies in litigation, opinion work and non-contentious advice relating to computer storage networks
- Assisting a leading chip company on protection of inventions relating to 3G and later communication devices and opinion work. He has also assisted prominent NASDAQ-listed and Taiwanese Chip companies with litigation, licensing and portfolio management
- Assisting a London listed drug delivery company with entitlement disputes arising from partnering programs, litigation and managing global patent and trade mark portfolios
- Assisting leading banking technology companies and financial institutions with IP filing programs, opposition proceedings, IP policies and infrastructure for decision making and monitoring
- Advising a considerable number of European technology companies on worldwide IP strategy and competitive positioning. A number of Justin’s technology clients are leading and shaping the sectors in which they operate
