Yuichiro Takayanagi is self-employed counsel in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP and is based in the Firm’s Orange County office. Yuichiro focuses on strategic business counseling regarding intellectual property matters.
Yuichiro has significant corporate acquisition and other large transactional experience in multinational settings. Prior to joining McDermott, Yuichiro served as senior vice president for IP legal, licensing and government affairs for a global consumer electronics manufacturer of video, audio and automobile navigation products. In this capacity, he was responsible for patent, licensing, trademark and copyright matters. His litigation experience includes serving as chief in-house legal advisor of the corporate group in an important patent infringement lawsuit, where his employer won a $60 million verdict.
During this period, Yuichiro also served as a board member of the video division of the Consumer Electronics Association, a leading standard-setting organization for consumer video products and services, and participated in key industry and governmental lobbying activities, particularly those involving cable and video standards with the FCC. He also served as executive committee chair for an internal audit of the U.S. holding company of the corporate group and established the group’s first implementation program for J-SOX compliance.
Prior to this, Yuichiro served for 10 years as North American general counsel of a large Japanese multinational industrial and automotive electronics manufacturer located in Chicago. In that capacity, Yuichiro successfully managed the corporate group’s legal and intellectual property affairs for the North American holding company and the subsidiaries located in Illinois, Michigan, California, Canada, Brazil and Mexico.
Yuichiro started his legal career as a corporate lawyer and handled M&A and large financial transactions at an international law firm in Chicago. Although his focus in recent years has been intellectual property counseling, his experience in corporate transactional work helps him to provide balanced perspective to his clients based on economic conditions, risks and business objectives.
Yuichiro has additional experience in employment, U.S. Customs compliance and corporate governance matters.
Yuichiro can conduct all professional communications in Japanese. He also has limited knowledge of Chinese (Mandarin) and has delivered presentations in Mandarin to Chinese government lawyers on American business laws and related issues. He is admitted to practice in Illinois. He is not admitted to practice in California.
