Robert J. McDermott is of counsel in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP and is based in the Firm's New York office. He focuses on state and local tax matters.
Prior to joining the Firm, Robert was a Commissioner of the New York State Tax Appeals Tribunal. The Tribunal is a three-member panel which is appointed by the Governor to hear appeals of Administrative Law Judge determinations of New York State tax matters, principally involving corporate, personal income and sales and use taxes.
Before his appointment to the Tribunal, Robert was in private practice working on state and local and federal tax matters, representing clients before the New York State Division of Tax Appeals and the Internal Revenue Service, and advising on tax aspects of corporate transactions, capital markets offerings, charitable foundations and tax-exempt bond financings.
Robert is a member of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York (Committee on Taxation 1979-1982), the New York State Bar Association Tax Section (Executive Committee 1980-1990), and the American Bar Association Section of Taxation. He is also a Life Fellow of the New York Bar Foundation and from 1989 to 1991 was President of the NYU Law Alumni Association.
Robert is admitted to practice in New York and before the federal courts, including 2d Circuit, S.D.N.Y., E.D.N.Y., and the U.S. Tax Court.
