Andrea Hamilton is an associate in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP based in its Brussels office.  She is a member of the Antitrust and Competition Practice Group.  Formerly based in the Firm’s Washington, D.C. office, she has extensive experience practicing before the European Commission, Federal Trade Commission and Department of Justice.

Andrea’s practice involves defending mergers and acquisitions, regulatory counseling, and antitrust litigation in cartel and monopolization (abuse of dominance) cases.  She represents clients in government investigations, including criminal antitrust investigations, and has also represented clients in the regulatory and legislative process before the European Commission and Parliament.

Andrea counsels clients on matters related to antitrust and competition legal compliance, potential antitrust litigation, trade associations and consumer protection matters related to deceptive advertising.  She has defended clients in antitrust litigation, including class action matters.  Andrea has substantial experience in a variety of industries, including financial services, pharmaceuticals, aviation, high tech, computer products (hardware and software), hospitals and hospital equipment, defence, medical devices, chemicals and mining.

Andrea has co-authored articles on antitrust law both in the United States and in Europe.  While attending the University of Virginia School of Law, Andrea served as the editor-in-chief of the Virginia Journal of International Law.

Andrea is admitted to practice in Brussels, New York and the District of Columbia.

Representative Experience

Andrea has extensive experience in counseling clients on merger notification requirements in both Europe and the United States, as well as preparing merger notifications throughout the world.   Her representative experience includes:

  • Advising on the notifiability of a number of large mergers to different jurisdictions worldwide
  • Advising multinational companies on cartel proceedings before the European Commission
  • Advising on the antitrust aspects of a projected acquisitions in the United States and European Union
  • Preparing amicus briefs submitted to the U.S. Supreme Court relating to the antitrust treatment of joint ventures
  • Defending clients before U.S. antitrust agencies in “second requests
