Charles J. Hawkins is an associate in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP and is based in the Firm’s Washington, D.C. office. Chuck focuses his practice on the litigation of intellectual property disputes. He has been involved in litigation dealing with utility patent, design patent, trademark, trade secret and trade dress infringement and has handled matters at all stages of litigation, investigations involving allegations of unfair importation at the United States International Trade Commission (ITC) and including appeals to the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the U.S. Supreme Court. Chuck has litigated intellectual property cases in federal courts in California, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas and Virginia, and the ITC. Chuck also counsels clients on issues related to patents, trademarks and copyrights.
Prior to joining McDermott, Chuck was a member of the intellectual property group at a law firm in Washington, D.C. Prior to entering the practice of law, Chuck was a petroleum engineer at a fully integrated oil and gas company, where he worked in a field office as a production engineer and as a drilling engineer on offshore drilling platforms.
Chuck earned his J.D., magna cum laude, from the American University Washington College of Law in Washington, D.C. and his B.S. in petroleum engineering from Pennsylvania State University. While in law school, Chuck was a contributing member of The American University Law Review.
Chuck is a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association, Intellectual Property Owners Association, ITC Trial Lawyers Association and Bar Association of the District of Columbia. Chuck is admitted to practice in Virginia, the District of Columbia, before the United States Courts of Appeals for the Fourth and Federal Circuits, before the United States District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Virginia, and before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
