Robin L. Greenhouse is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP and is based in the Firm’s Washington, D.C., office.  Robin represents clients in resolving complex federal tax controversies with the IRS at audit or appeals, and in tax litigation in the U.S. Tax Court, the U.S. Court of Federal Claims and the U.S. District Courts.  She has litigated federal tax cases involving numerous issues, including:  foreign tax credits, allocation of expenses between domestic and foreign source income, section 1341 claim of right, calculation of interest, investment tax credits, superfund excise taxes and tax accounting.

Recent cases include General Mills, Inc. v. United States, 2008 U.S. Dist. LEXIS 3196 (D. Minn 2008), rev’d 554 F. 3d 727 (8th Cir. 2009); Capital One Financial v. Commissioner, 133 T.C. No. 8 (Sept. 21, 2009); Texaco Inc. v. United States, 528 F. 3d 703 (9th Cir. 2008); and Texaco Inc. v. United States (filed in 2000, pending in the Court of Federal Claims).

Robin is a recognized authority on the attorney-client, work product and tax practitioner privileges, and speaks frequently on matters relating to tax litigation and administrative practice.   She is active in the American Bar Association Section of Taxation, is chair of the Committee on Appointments to the Tax Court and is a past chair of the Court Procedure and Practice Committee.  She has also served as a member of the Committee on Tax Court Nominations.

Prior to entering private practice, Robin served as a trial lawyer with the U.S. Department of Justice, Tax Division.  She litigated numerous cases before district courts and bankruptcy courts and was honored as a recipient of the U.S. Department of Justice, Tax Division’s “Outstanding Attorney” award in 1987.

Robin is identified as a recommended lawyer in the tax controversy field in the 2010 and 2011 editions of The Legal 500 United States.  She is also listed in Best Lawyers in America.

She is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia and before the United States Tax Court, United States Court of Federal Claims and United States Supreme Court.
