Heather Egan Sussman is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP and is based in the Firm's Boston office.  She brings a practical, business-sense approach to solving workplace issues that helps clients efficiently and effectively manage every kind of HR risk.

In her employment practice, Heather helps clients successfully navigate the many state and federal laws that govern the workplace, including laws covering payment of wages, fair employment practices, reasonable accommodations, discrimination and harassment, family and medical leave, reductions in force and more.  She negotiates executive employment agreements and enforceable restrictive covenants, and she helps multinational clients establish worksites throughout the United States.

As a Certified Information Privacy Professional, Heather routinely advises companies on nationwide data security laws in the workplace context, for example, when an employee compromises confidential data, or when a security breach or security event occurs in the workplace.  Heather helps businesses proactively protect private information and, in the event of a breach, she helps clients respond and remediate.

Heather has successfully litigated, mediated and arbitrated both small and large-scale workplace-related disputes at state and federal agencies and in courts nationwide.  Companies routinely rely on Heather to manage their response to catastrophes, investigations and government probes involving conduct by employees, contractors and customers.

Prior to joining McDermott, Heather worked in the Boston office of a prominent financial institution.  While attending law school, she was a member of the prestigious National Moot Court Team.  She earned her B.A., magna cum laude, from the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, where she was awarded departmental honors and named a Commonwealth Scholar.  Heather also earned a Certificate of French Proficiency from the University of Grenoble in Grenoble, France.

Heather is an active member of the Boston Bar Association and the American Bar Association.  She is a member in good standing of the Massachusetts Bar and the Bar of the United States District Court, District of Massachusetts.   Heather also volunteers regularly for the Firm’s pro bono initiatives and in her community.
