Charles Shiramba is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery UK LLP, based in its London office.  He is a member of the Banking & Finance Group and specializes in advising insolvency officeholders, debtors, creditors and other clients in international and domestic insolvencies and restructurings and in the distressed debt markets.  Many of these matters have involved Chapter 11 proceedings, Chapter 7 proceedings, Canadian CCAA proceedings and proceedings in continental Europe as well as proceedings and processes in the United Kingdom. 

Charles is a former lecturer at the Oxford Institute of Legal Practice, a regular contributor to insolvency and restructuring publications and a frequent speaker at industry conferences and seminars.  He is also a member of the Insolvency Lawyers' Association and R3.

Representative Experience

  • Advising insolvency officeholders and business turnaround professionals on a broad range of insolvency and restructuring matters
  • Advising directors of financially troubled businesses on directors' duties, obligations and potential liabilities
  • Advising Deutsche Bank, as security trustee, in respect of the financial restructuring of the Welcome Break group
  • Advising the major trade creditor of British Energy in respect of British Energy's financial restructuring, the largest of its kind in British corporate history
  • Advising Monitor, the regulator of foundation trust hospitals, on the failure regime applicable to the hospitals and the possibilities for the evolution of the regime
  • Advising Teleglobe Inc., the Canadian international telecommunications company, in the initial stages of its restructuring in the Canadian CCAA procedure, related U.S. entities in Chapter 11 and the administrators of the U.K. companies on the sale of the UK businesses
  • Advising the U.K.'s largest international nuclear energy business on the restructuring of its nuclear liabilities
  • Advising lenders to financially troubled businesses on insolvency contingency planning, standstill arrangements, insolvency officeholder appointments and asset disposals
