Krista Vink Venegas is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP and is based in the Firm’s Chicago office.  Krista represents high-tech companies in complex patent litigation, including medical devices, pharmaceuticals, food science and other life sciences technologies.  She also has substantial experience conducting intellectual property due diligence analysis in the context of life sciences portfolio acquisitions and corporate mergers, completing freedom to operate assessments and counseling academic institutions on life sciences patent portfolios.

Prior to beginning the practice of law, Krista conducted research at the University of California, Los Angeles School of Medicine, Department of Neurobiology.  She is the author or co-author of several published papers in the fields of molecular neuroendocrinology, neural development and behavior.  She received her Ph.D. from the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at UCLA.

Krista is a member of the bars of the states of Illinois and California, and is admitted to practice before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the U.S. District Courts for the Northern District of Illinois, Western District of Wisconsin, Eastern District of Texas, Central District of California and District of Colorado.  Krista is also a member of the Trial Bar of the Northern District of Illinois.

Representative Experience

  • Conducts due diligence analysis of intellectual property assets in corporate acquisitions, including the acquisitions of an immunology patent portfolio, a cancer therapy developer and an image-guided surgery system developer
  • Conducts federal patent infringement litigation, including Hatch-Waxman litigation for pharmaceutical products (Ortho TriCyclen Lo® (oral contraceptives), Avinza® and Fentora® (extended and immediate release pain medications, respectively), Differin® and MetroGel® (topical treatments for acne and rosacea), Evoxac® (treatment for dry mouth) and Nuvigil® (neuro-stimulant)) and medical devices (including stents, neuronavigation systems and ultrasound systems)
  • Advises on patent portfolios relating to treatments for autoimmune diseases and bone growth factors
