Matthew McCloskey is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP and is based in the Firm's Boston office.  Matt focuses his practice on U.S. and foreign patent prosecution, patent portfolio management and trademark prosecution, in addition to analysis and opinion work for patent validity, infringement and patentability issues.  He also supports patent infringement litigation, intellectual property licensing, and intellectual property due diligence for corporate mergers and acquisitions.  He has experience developing and protecting intellectual property in a variety of fields, including:

  • Antenna systems used in cell phone and satellite communications systems
  • Medical devices including MRI systems, CT imaging systems, retinal implants, ultrasonic probes, ultrasonic imaging systems and medical laser systems
  • Combustion head design for airplane and helicopter engines
  • Carbon nanotube memory devices
  • Semiconductor devices including optical sensors and related amplification circuits, diode lasers, LEDs, and bipolar and field-effect transistors
  • Semiconductor processing equipment including mass flow controllers, capacitance manometers and atomic layer deposition systems
  • Optical systems including fiber-optics, medical laser systems, high-power and communications laser systems, infrared imaging systems and spectroscopy systems
  • Radar systems including phased array systems and ultra-wideband systems
  • Digital image processing systems and techniques
  • Chip and circuit board technology including flip-chip mounts, impedance-matching circuits, via structures and ball grid arrays
  • Broadband cell phone technology including turbo code systems and technology conforming with 3rd generation “3GPP” standards

Prior to joining McDermott, Matt was in private practice at a Boston area defense contactor where he focused on prosecution of U.S. and foreign patent applications related to defense and military technology, and legal support for contracts with the U.S. Department of Defense.

Matt earned an M.S. in electrical engineering at Tufts University in 2006, completing a project for cell phone microwave antenna designs based on fractal geometries.  He also earned a graduate certificate in photonics and optoelectronic devices with coursework in semiconductor physics and modern optics in 2003.  While attending Franklin Pierce Law Center, Matt was an editor of the RISK Law Journal from 2000 to 2001.

Matt has done pro bono work for the Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts including copyright licensing and contract dispute negotiation.  He has done additional pro bono work for the Medical-Legal Partnership for Children including work in probate court and work restoring utility services for clients.  Matt is a member of the Tuft’s Lawyers Association, the IEEE and the Sports Car Club of America.
