John D. Healey is an associate in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP based in the Firm’s Chicago office. As a member of the Health Law Department, John’s practice focuses on information technology for clients in the health and other industries.
John has more than 20 years of experience working with information technology vendors, primarily in the health industry. Prior to joining the Firm, John grew a start-up company from initial product launch to more than $12 million in recurring annual revenue. He performed multiple functions, including contract reviews, Medicare/HIPAA compliance, information technology security planning, and product feature, capacity and security testing.
John also has experience in privacy and security matters including addressing security breaches and drafting security policies and procedures and addressing ownership and rights to use data, including personally identifiable information. His experience also includes drafting and negotiating of software license and other information technology agreements, web site terms of use and privacy policies, nondisclosure agreements, web hosting agreements and services agreements.
He has also been the worldwide contact for pharmaceutical and medical device industry issues for a software company with $450 million in annual revenue. There, he investigated contract performance issues and negotiated remedial actions with clients when business units were unable to resolve disputes.
As an executive with a medical device manufacturer, John certified his division to the European Union Medical Device Directive, thereby simplifying product exports to Europe. He also insured compliance with FDA and international medical regulations, insuring smooth product launches and ongoing operations for four product lines worldwide.
John graduated from the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York and served as a Commissioned Officer on active duty in Hawaii, Korea, and Japan for the United States Army.
John is the author of “A Vendor’s View of Simplifying HIPAA Compliance,” published in Advance for Health Information Executives.
