Dr. Gero Burwitz is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery Rechtsanwälte Steuerberater LLP, based in its Munich office. He is a member of the Tax Department. As a licensed tax specialist (Fachanwalt für Steuerrecht), his practice focuses on taxation of business entities (partnerships and corporations), tax aspects of financing and reorganization, International and European tax law, income taxation and tax litigation before tax courts and the German Supreme Tax Court (Bundesfinanzhof).
Gero has extensive experience in tax aspects of Long-Term-Employee-Incentive-programs, tax litigation and the taxation of non-profit-organizations.
Prior to joining the Firm, Gero worked as a tax lawyer for a major German law firm and for Raupach & Wollert-Elmendorff Rechtsanwaltsgesellschaft mbH ((legal) arm of Deloitte in Germany).
Gero attended the University of Munich and did his legal clerkship (Referendariat) in Munich, Brussels and New York. He took his Ph.D. at the University of Osnabrueck with a doctoral thesis regarding group financing companies in International Tax Law. He has published numerous articles on tax issues.
Gero is recommended in JUVE Handbuch Wirtschaftskanzleien 2010/11 (leading directory of German commercial law firms) as well as in European Legal 500 2011 in the field of tax.
Gero is admitted to practice in Germany and is a licensed tax specialist.
