Michael W. Connelly is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP and is based in the Washington, D.C. office.   He is a member of the Intellectual Property, Media & Technology Department. Michael concentrates his practice on patent litigation, intellectual property licensing and counseling private and public clients on the valuation, assertion and protection of intellectual property assets.

In addition to U.S. District Court, Michael has particular experience in practice before the International Trade Commission.   Michael has litigated cases in the fields of microelectromechnical machines (MEMS), pharmaceuticals, computer hardware and software, electronics, mechanical systems, medical devices and chemical and biotechnology systems and processes.  In addition, Michael has filed reexaminations and prepared arguments for presentation before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in the areas of chemical compositions and processes, computer programs, semiconductors and telecommunication circuitry systems.

Michael also counsels both U.S. and China-based clients on cross-border intellectual property issues, including enforcement, licensing and the interplay of regulatory approval and intellectual property

Michael has extensive experience in the valuation, assessment, licensing and transfer of intellectual property assets. Michael has drafted and negotiated licenses of domestic and foreign patents and patent applications, copyrights, trademarks, trade secrets, publicity rights and databases for a variety of private and public company clients. Michael has particular experience in assessing and protecting intellectual property rights accrued under DOD, DARPA, SBIR/STTR and other governmental grants and programs, including FAR and DFAR compliance.   Michael has also worked extensively in the health data collection and aggregation business, structuring the licensing and intellectual property protection of prescription medical databases while maintaining HIPAA and federal and state privacy law compliance for Verispan, LLC, McKesson HBOC and others.

Prior to joining McDermott, Michael was in private practice working on a variety of intellectual property law matters including litigation, prosecution of patent applications, rendering opinions concerning infringement issues and providing counsel and advice to clients regarding the protection and enforcement of intellectual property rights.
