Valentin A. Povarchuk is an associate in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP based in the Washington, D.C. office. He is a member of the Firm’s Global Trade & Cross Border Strategies Practice Group, where his practice includes a broad range of trade-related matters, including WTO litigation and domestic trade remedy actions; export control, customs, anti-boycott compliance and sanctions matters; bilateral and multilateral trade negotiations and preferential trade regimes; as well as certain other international law matters. In addition, Valentin has advised clients on issues of excise taxation and country of origin labeling of imported alcohol.
Valentin received a bachelor’s degree from Cornell University with honors summa cum laude and with distinction in all subjects. He was a Government major, with concentrations in International Relations and French Studies.
During law school, Valentin served as Editor-In-Chief of the Pacific Rim Law & Policy journal, where he published a Comment on the Russian law on Special Economic Zones. In addition, in 2004, he was a Comparative Federalism program fellow in Brussels, Belgium, conducting a comparative study of American and European trade institutions, European tax and financial law, and the law of the World Trade Organization.
Valentin is a member of the American Bar Association’s International Practice Section, where he serves as a secretary of the International Trade Committee. He is a co-author and editor of the 2007 year-in-review section on international trade to be published in the ABA journal, The International Lawyer.
