Joseph F. Winterscheid is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP and is based in the Washington, D.C., office.  Joe is head of the Firm’s global Antitrust & Competition Practice Group and his practice focuses on U.S. and international antitrust law.  From 1989 to 1994, Joe was partner-in-charge of an international law office in Brussels, where his practice focused on representing clients in competition matters before the European Commission and EU Member State competition authorities.

Joe regularly advises clients on competition issues in mergers, acquisitions and joint ventures, including U.S. and international premerger notification requirements.  His experience also includes counseling on matters related to pricing and distribution practices, intellectual property licensing arrangements and e-commerce initiatives.  Joe’s sectoral experience has encompassed a wide range of industries, including air transport, automotive products, chemicals, consumer goods, defense, health care, industrial products, pharmaceuticals, specialty metals and fabricated metal products.  According to Chambers USA:  America’s Leading Lawyers for Business, Joe “commands enduring client loyalty for his ability to transform legal theory into practical reality.”

He has served in a variety of leadership positions in the Antitrust Section of the American Bar Association, including Chair of the International Antitrust Committee, Vice Chair of the Corporate Counseling Committee and as a member of the Special Task Force on Antitrust and the Global Economy and the International Competition Policy Advisory Committee Task Force.  He has also served as a private sector Advisor to the U.S. FTC/Antitrust Division delegation to the International Competition Network.  In addition to being recognized as a leading antitrust lawyer in Chambers USA, he has also been listed in Euromoney Legal Media Group’s Guide to the World’s Leading Competition and Antitrust Lawyers; Global Competition Review’s International Who’s Who of Competition Lawyers; The Best Lawyers in America;  as a leading lawyer in his field by The Legal 500 United States; as a Washington, D.C. “Super Lawyer” by Law and Politics; and as a recommended competition lawyer in Practical Law Company’s Cross-border Competition Law Handbook.

Joe served as editor-in-chief of the Notre Dame Law Review while in law school.  He is admitted to practice in Ohio and the District of Columbia.

  • Representation of AirNewco, an airline-led B2B consortium, which included Air France, American Airlines, British Airways, Continental Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Iberia Air Lines, Swiss Air Group, and United Airlines, in connection with its formation and combination with MyAircraft, an aerospace manufacturer-led B2B exchange, to create the global Cordiem aviation industry B2B exchange
  • Representation of Aleris International in connection with its acquisition of Wabash Alloys, to create North America’s leading producer of aluminum specification alloys; its acquisition of ALSCO Metals Corporation, a leading manufacturer of fabricated aluminum building and construction products; and its acquisition of aluminum rolling mill, recycling facility and specialty blank production assets from Ormet Corporation
