Health Department Chair Receives Service Award
CHICAGO (June 28, 2006) — Michael Anthony, chair of McDermott Will & Emery's Health Department, is the 2006 recipient of the American Health Lawyers Association's (AHLA) David J. Greenburg Service Award. This award is given to an individual who has shown great loyalty to AHLA and made significant contributions to the growth and life of the association throughout his or her career. The award's namesake was instrumental in the formation of both the American Academy of Healthcare Attorneys and the National Health Lawyers Association, two organizations that ultimately merged in 1997 to form AHLA.
"We are all very proud of Mike and know he will wear this honor well as a result of all he has done—and continues to do—to advance health law as a profession and as a force for change in our society," commented Harvey W. Freishtat, Chair of the Firm.
Mr. Anthony was presented with the award at the recent AHLA Board of Directors dinner, held in conjunction with the 2006 AHLA Annual Meeting in Philadelphia. Mr. Anthony is the 17th Greenburg Service recipient and the third member from McDermott to receive the award. McDermott is among only three firms that have had more than one of its lawyers receive this award.
Mr. Anthony was one of McDermott's first health care lawyer when he joined the Firm in 1980, and has been a primary cornerstone in building the Firm's health practice to where it is today. Mr. Anthony is the former senior vice president of the American Hospital Association, and has served as counsel in connection with a number of projects including provider affiliations, integrated delivery system development, formation of HMOs and PPOs, health care mergers, acquisitions and affiliations, joint ventures, joint operating arrangements, reimbursement systems, medical group representation and other legal and policy issues.
With an over 50-year history of serving the health care industry, McDermott has one of the United States' largest and most prestigious health law departments.
