McDermott Will & Emery Strengthens Antitrust Practice With Hire of Leading German Competition Partner to Brussels Office
BRUSSELS (27 August 2010) – International law firm McDermott Will & Emery LLP has today announced the significant expansion of its global Antitrust and Competition Law practice with the appointment of leading competition partner Martina Maier to the Firm’s EU competition practice. Martina joins McDermott’s Brussels office from Howrey LLP, where she was a partner in its highly ranked competition practice. It is anticipated that Martina will join McDermott on 13 September, and effective 1 January 2011, she will succeed Clive Stanbrook as head of McDermott’s EU Competition practice. Clive will continue his practice at McDermott following this transition as the senior competition partner in the Brussels office.
Martina’s appointment follows the arrival in July of competition partner Wilko van Weert from SJ Berwin, and further highlights the Firm’s focus on expanding its European Antitrust and Competition Law practice as part of its growth strategy. Both new hires have extensive experience in representing clients before the European Commission and national competition authorities, and Martina’s arrival will significantly reinforce the Firm’s German competition law capabilities.
In addition to her broad antitrust and competition experience, Martina has a strong international background, having studied public administration at the prestigious Ecole Nationale d’Administration in Paris, where she also practised law for many years. This combined experience has contributed to her being ranked highly by many international publications, including World’s Leading Competition and Antitrust Lawyers, the JUVE Handbook of German Commercial Law Firms, Euromoney’s Guide to the World’s Leading Women in Business Law and Global Competition Review’s Leading Women in Antitrust.
Commenting on the appointments, Clive Stanbrook OBE QC, head of the EU Competition Law practice, said: “I am very pleased to welcome Martina to the Firm. Martina’s background and experience make her an excellent choice to lead our EU Competition Law practice, and I look forward to working closely with her during our transition period and beyond on further developing our already excellent practice.”
Commenting on her move to McDermott, Martina Maier stated: “I am delighted to be joining McDermott and to be working once again in the context of a diversified business practice, advising clients on all aspects of competition law.”
“Martina’s appointment is an important step in our continued expansion of our competition practice in Europe, and underscores McDermott’s commitment to focusing on areas that are of key importance to the Firm’s global growth strategy," added Joe Winterscheid, head of the Firm’s global Antitrust and Competition Law practice.
