Tutoring Program Helps U.S. Students Reach Aspirations

CHICAGO — On September 4, McDermott Will & Emery implemented a firm-wide, volunteer tutoring program in all of its U.S. offices. The program focuses on developing essential reading and grammar skills of children at schools in Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Orange County, Silicon Valley and Washington, DC.

The Chicago office of McDermott Will & Emery will begin tutoring third grade students at the William H. Brown Elementary School on October 3, 2001. Lawyers, non-lawyer professionals and administrative staff will tutor every Wednesday afternoon during the 2001-2002 school year.

Forty lawyers and administrative staff members from the Chicago office have already volunteered to participate.

"I am ecstatic about having this new tutorial program at Brown," commented Connie Thomas, principal at Brown Elementary School. "This program will positively impact student achievement."

In June 2001, the Firm received an Outstanding Achievement Award in Public Education from the Washington, D.C. Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights, a private, nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, for its participation in an affiliated tutoring program in which 60 of the Firm’s Washington, D.C. employees tutored second graders at Bowen Elementary School in reading and related skills. The recognition touted McDermott, Will & Emery for its three year partnership with the Bowen Elementary School and its involvement in its tutoring program.

The Firm is now establishing similar tutoring outreach programs in several of its U.S. offices. "This is an excellent opportunity for our Firm to help young students improve their reading and other learning skills in order to build a strong foundation for their futures," said Paul Pantano. "We are delighted that we have the opportunity to share more of our Firm’s resources and expertise to support this important cause."
