Intellectual Property Practice Expands to Munich office

MUNICH — McDermott Will & Emery’s Munich office, which opened in January 2002, has added intellectual property to its practice portfolio with the addition of Dr. Boris Uphoff who joined the Firm as a partner on July 1. Dr. Uphoff continues McDermott's expansion in the area of intellectual property.

"Our Intellectual Property Department has grown to more than 140 lawyers worldwide," commented Jack Lever, head of the Firm’s IP Department. "Boris will be instrumental in continuing our international growth, bringing our presence to Germany, which is such an important European IP center, and to Munich, in particular, which is where the European Patent Office is located."

Dr. Uphoff focuses his practice in trademarks, unfair competition, copyright, design rights and patents. His work in these areas, mostly contentious, has included representing plaintiffs and defendants in infringement suits before all major commercial courts in Germany. His litigation work also encompasses cross border disputes with some of his recent cases involving parties from the U.S., Israel, Australia, the Netherlands, Denmark and Poland. Dr. Uphoff also has experience advising clients on software and technology licenses. In addition, he practices product liability law, defending large manufacturers of medical products and household goods as well as their insurers.

"With Dr. Uphoff to start up our intellectual property practice in Munich, we enhance the Firm’s pan-European and  international capabilities as well as the services we have to offer locally," Christian von Sydow, partner-in-charge of McDermott’s Munich office said.

Dr. Uphoff served his traineeship at the Regional Court of Wiesbaden, German. Dr. Uphoff earned his Dr. jur. from the University of Konstanz and attended the University of Mainz.
