McDermott’s Howard E. Steinberg Named Chairman of the Long Island Power Authority by New York Governor Patterson

Leading securities lawyer will head nation’s second largest municipal electric utility, the latest in several high-profile state executive roles he has held

NEW YORK (February 23, 2010) —  Howard E. Steinberg, partner in the New York City office of global law firm McDermott Will & Emery LLP, was designated by New York Governor David A. Patterson on February 2, 2010 to be Chairman of the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA).  Mr. Steinberg has served on LIPA’s board since 1999, including the last 13 months as Acting Chairman.  LIPA is the second largest municipal electric utility in the nation in terms of electric revenues, and the third largest in terms of customers served.  It is the primary electric power provider to more than 1.1 million people on Long Island.

In addition to his extensive experience in mergers and acquisitions, securities law and corporate governance issues as a member of McDermott’s Transactions Business Unit, Mr. Steinberg has served in several other high-profile leadership positions with New York State public agencies.  That includes as former Chairman of the New York State Thruway Authority and former Chairman of the New York State Canal Corporation.  He has also held senior governance positions as a member of the Board of Regents of Georgetown University, an Overseer of the University of Pennsylvania School of Arts and Sciences, and as Chair of the Committee on Federal Regulation of the Securities Industry Association.

Before joining McDermott in 2005, Mr. Steinberg was a senior executive and general counsel with Prudential Equity Group and Prudential Securities, and with Reliance Group Holdings Inc.  He is admitted to practice in New York, and received his J.D. degree from Georgetown University Law Center.
