Significant Tax Group Joins McDermott Will & Emery

The international law firm of McDermott Will & Emery announces today the appointment of four key tax lawyers from Raupach & Wollert-Elmendorff Rechtsanwaltsgesellschaft mbH,which is the legal arm of Deloitte & Touche in Germany. The high profile team located in Munich is well-known in the German market, as the firm is renowned as one of the leading tax law firms in the country.    The tax team of the firm was ranked No. 3 in the Handelsblatt 2003 survey of the 1,800 largest companies in Germany.

Teamleader and Partner, Dr. Dirk Pohl, joins McDermott, Will & Emery as a highly regarded tax lawyer.   He is rated by clients and peers as an innovative practitioner with a strong reputation for his sophisticated tax work. With impressive academic credentials, he exceeded the usual partner route at Raupach & Wollert-Elmendorff and worked closely with Professor Dr Raupach in the late nineties to build up this practice and its international reputation.   His practice includes advising on all aspects of tax law, including international tax law, tax litigation, the taxation of partnerships and corporations, as well as estate planning, corporate law and restructuring.

Professor Dr. Arndt Raupach was one of the two founders and name partners of the law firm Rädler/Raupach, long regarded as the best tax law firm in Germany. According to Chambers Guide to the Legal Profession, clients describe him as "economically astute” and add that “he is considered one of the most eminent names in the market.   He is well-known for both his technical precision and international experience.”  He advises on national and international tax law, tax litigation, integrated legal, tax and organization counselling of Business Enterprises and on legal issues of the so-called "Third Section" (between State and Economy).

The other two members of the team are Gero Burwitz and Professor Rüdiger von Groll.   Gero Burwitz is a specialised tax attorney whose practice includes advising on income tax, the taxation of business entities and international tax law, as well as tax litigation.   Rüdiger von Groll, who retired last year as a judge at the German Federal Tax Court, advises on tax and fiscal charge law, the fiscal court code, and turnover tax law (incl. the 6th EC-Directive) and lectures as a Professor at the Universities of Munich and Bologna.

Our existing German tax group, which includes Dr. Richard Schmidt in Duesseldorf, will be significantly strengthened by the addition of these key lawyers.

Mike Fayhee, Global Head of the Tax Group and Peter Nias, Head of Tax in London, “These high profile lawyers bring strength and reputation in a market where there are few true specialists.  Their expertise will help us further develop our existing tax practice in Germany and our cross-border business, as well as complementing our highly rated US Tax and European practices.”

Dirk Pohl agrees, adding, “We are very excited to be joining McDermott Will & Emery in Germany.   Its global reputation in tax means that we can really concentrate on our domestic and international work from a position of strength, resulting in synergies for our clients.”
