Andrea S. Kramer Publishes Book on Green and Alternative Energy Projects

CHICAGO (August 13, 2010) — Recent events in the Gulf Coast have increased interest in the development of green and environmentally-sound energy sources.  Yet, the legal and financing structure required to bring such projects “on line” are complex, requiring unique business structures and a clear understanding of technology limitations, risk and liability allocations with multiple contracts with different parties, and ways to maximize government incentives and tax benefits.

Recognizing the need for a comprehensive guide to these issues, McDermott Will & Emery LLP partner Andrea S. Kramer has brought together top legal and economic experts in this emerging field in a new book entitled, Energy and Environmental Project Finance Law and Taxation: New Investment Techniques.  Ms. Kramer is head of McDermott’s Financial Products, Trading and Derivatives Group, co chair of its Energy Services Group, and a member of its Global Renewable Energy, Emissions and New Products Group.

“As demand increases for renewable and green energy projects, this book arms readers with crucial information about every aspect of project development and financing.  It addresses carbon credits, environmental certificates, unique financing issues, customized contract techniques, lender protections, government incentives, and key tax benefits,” explained Ms. Kramer.

Edited by Ms. Kramer and Peter Fusaro, chairman of Global Change Associates, the book is an innovative, one-stop resource that starts with conventional project financings and builds off them to address the complicated process of putting together viable projects for renewable, green, and alternative energy.  It also addresses the need for improved transmission and interconnection facilities and offers hedging and insurance strategies.  Given the reliance on tax credits and incentives to make these projects successful, the book focuses on techniques used to monetize tax benefits and addresses special considerations for the development of projects based on wind, photovoltaic, solar, geothermal, biomass, and the new generation of nuclear power.

Ms. Kramer and Mr. Fusaro created this book for project developers, lawyers, power company executives, renewable energy project managers, business analysts, investors, venture capitalists, investment bankers, and students of U.S. energy policy.  Because this book is a comprehensive resource, readers can start at page one, or they can turn to specific chapters or topics that interest them.
