Boston Partner Elected President of Eastern New England Chapter of The Society of Corporate Secretaries & Governance Professionals

BOSTON (December 14, 2009) — McDermott Will & Emery LLP is pleased to announce that David Cifrino, partner in the Firm's Corporate Department based in Boston, has been elected President of the Eastern New England Chapter of The Society of Corporate Secretaries & Governance Professionals (the Society).

“Due to today’s challenging economy and increased awareness of the value of high standards of enlightened corporate governance, this is a very significant time for those who are involved in governance and corporate compliance,” said Mr. Cifrino.  “Our Chapter is well suited to play an increasing role in helping corporate secretaries, counsel and governance professionals in this region meet the ever greater expectations of Boards of Directors, shareholders, regulators and other important constituencies.”  

Mr. Cifrino is co-head of McDermott’s Public Companies Group.  He represents financial services, industrial, high technology, consumer products and other companies, public and private, in governance, strategic, securities, merger, acquisition, disposition and commercial matters.

The Society also elected the following officers: Vice President — Michael S. Bloom, Assistant Vice President and Senior Counsel and Secretary at Sun Life Financial, Inc.'s U.S. operations; Secretary — Merrily Gerrish, an Associate General Counsel at Bank of America Corporation; Treasurer —  Katherine Anderson, a Managing Director at Computershare Investor Services LLC.  The following Eastern New England Chapter members were also elected to the Chapter's Advisory Board: James A. McDaniel, a Partner at Choate, Hall & Stewart; Richard J. Morrison, Associate General Counsel and Secretary at NSTAR Electric & Gas Corporation and the immediate past president of the Chapter; William J. Mostyn III, a Vice President and Corporate Secretary at TIAA-CREF and a former Chapter President and Chairman of the Society; Susan I. Permut, Senior Vice President and Deputy General Counsel at EMC Corporation.

The Society, founded in 1946 as the American Society of Corporate Secretaries, is comprised of more than 3,100 members representing approximately 2,000 companies nationwide.  Its members deal with public disclosure under the securities laws and matters affecting corporate governance, including the structure and meetings of the board of directors and its committees, the proxy process and the annual meeting of shareholders and shareholder relations, particularly with large institutional owners.  For more information on the Society visit:  http://www.governanceprofessionals.org.
