Leading Patent Litigator Joins Silicon Valley Office

PALO ALTO, CA (February 10, 2005) — The Silicon Valley office of McDermott Will & Emery is pleased to announce that William G. Gaede, III will be joining the Firm's Intellectual Property Department as a partner on Monday, February 14, 2005.  Mr. Gaede will co-chair McDermott's Biotechnology & Life Sciences Practice Group and will continue to focus his practice on significant intellectual property disputes in the life sciences and pharmaceutical industries.

Mr. Gaede has 16 years of experience in all facets of litigation.  Over the last eight years, he has served as lead counsel for a wide range of companies and research institutes in the life science and pharmaceutical industries.  Recent cases in which he played a leading role include Genentech Inc. v. Amgen Inc. and Corixa Corporation et al. v. BiogenIdec Inc.  He has also argued before the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals.

Mr. Gaede was previously a partner at Cooley Godward, where he was a leader in the Palo Alto Office's life science, litigation practice.  He earned his J.D. cum laude in 1988 from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law and received an undergraduate degree in English literature from Pitzer College.  In addition, Mr. Gaede served as an extern to the Honorable Stanley A. Weigel of the U.S. District Court, Northern District of California.  Mr. Gaede is a member of the Federal Circuit bar Association, the State Bar of California, the Association of Business Trial Lawyers and the San Francisco Bar Association.
