President of Legal Assistance Foundation of Chicago Named
CHICAGO — McDermott Will & Emery is pleased to announce that Donald B. Hilliker has been elected president of the Legal Assistance Foundation of Metropolitan Chicago (LAF). A long-time member of LAF’s Board of Directors, Mr. Hilliker commented, "It is an honor to serve this year as President of LAF. As lawyers, we should all give our time, energy and financial support to legal services and there is no more deserving organization in our community than LAF."
For over 30 years, LAF, the largest provider of legal services to the poor in the metropolitan area, has provided free legal aid to hundreds of thousands of the most vulnerable women, men and children in Cook County. Seeking to make the term "equal access to justice" a reality, LAF represents the most vulnerable and needy in Cook County. LAF provides advice to its clients, negotiates settlements on their behalf, represents them in court, and provides community legal education and self-help materials. LAF also works with government officials to improve public policies and with community groups on the resolution of community problems.
Mr. Hilliker, a trial partner at McDermott and Chair of the Firm’s Pro Bono Committee. represents clients in complex commercial litigation and in the defense of legal malpractice claims. He is a member and past chair of the American Bar Association Standing Committee on Ethics and Professional Responsibility and a former member of the Illinois Supreme Court Committee on Professional Responsibility, an adjunct professor at Northwestern University School of Law in its trial advocacy and ethics program, and has been honored for his service to Northwestern. He received his bachelor's degree from Loyola University of Chicago, and his law degree, cum laude and Order of the Coif, from Northwestern University School of Law.
