McDermott Ranked as a Leading Copyright Firm in Managing Intellectual Property's Largest Ever World IP Survey
WASHINGTON, D.C. (June 5, 2009) — McDermott Will & Emery is pleased to announce that the Firm’s copyright practice ranked among the top law firms in Managing Intellectual Property's World IP Survey (April 2009). The World IP survey researched leading IP law firms in 19 major jurisdictions. In addition to the Firm's high ranking on a national level, the survey also specifically recognizes the strength of the Firm's West Coast copyright practice in its regional rankings.
“Our global intellectual property team includes respected copyright and trademark lawyers,” commented Terrence P. McMahon, head of McDermott’s global Intellectual Property, Media & Technology Department. “We have a premier intellectual property practice and we deliver exceptional services to our clients in all of their intellectual property matters, as is reflected in our continued high rankings.”
The results of the survey are based on an international team of researchers conducting interviews with hundreds of practitioners and in-house counsel worldwide to reveal which firms are rated by their peers for the strength of their experience and the depth of their ability to service clients. No firm can vote for its own inclusion, or recommend an associate or sister firm in another jurisdiction. The rankings reflect the state of the market when the research was conducted, between September 2008 and January 2009.
Our Intellectual Property, Media & Technology lawyers represent clients in the entertainment, computer software and publishing industries. Our litigators have been responsible for handling high profile cases relating to cutting edge issues and have represented the major entertainment companies in copyright matters at trial and before appellate courts. The Firm's copyright practice has focused on issues as diverse as motion pictures, music, computer software and new copying technology.
In addition, our lawyers have worked in-house in the software industry in which analysis of complex copyright ownership, development and licensing issues occurs day-to-day. We recognize and resolve "crossover" copyright issues that arise in employment, licensing and trade secret matters. We handle pre-release clearance of motion picture and music content, multimedia products and music licensing in negotiations with the major performing rights societies, as well as individual music publishers. Additionally, our lawyers assist clients in setting up internal copyright registration programs and employee policies for use and clearance of third-party works.
