Patent Litigator Scott W. Clark Joins McDermott's IP Group

HOUSTON (April 21, 2009) — McDermott Will & Emery is proud to announce Scott W. Clark has joined the Firm's rapidly growing Houston office as a partner in the Intellectual Property, Media & Technology Department.  Mr. Clark joins the Firm's globally-ranked IP department with more than 200 lawyers practicing worldwide.

"The addition of Scott is a considerable step in strategically growing our Houston intellectual property practice, our global IP capabilities and amplifying our patent-litigation focus within the Texas district courts," said Fay Morisseau, head of McDermott's Houston office.

Mr. Clark's practice is committed to intellectual property law, principally patent litigation.  His extensive litigation experience extends from pre-litigation counseling through appeal, including case development, discovery management, motion practice, hearings, jury and bench trials and appeals before the Court of Appeals for the Federal Court.

"McDermott’s highly desirable, worldwide IP scope and its stellar rankings within the industry will launch opportunities for me and my practice," said Mr. Clark.  "Additionally, I look forward to working with IP partners Susan Knoll and Steven Spears in Houston, as well as the entire global IP team."

McDermott has consistently ranked as one of the most active patent prosecution firms in Intellectual Property Today's annual Top Patent Firms survey.  In the 2009 ranking, based on patents issued in 2008, the Firm's 1,448 patents issued placed 11th among 360 firms surveyed, and second among general practice firms – results that were equal to the previous year's rankings.

Mr. Clark earned his J.D. from the University of Texas School of Law, with honors, and his BSChE, with high honors, from the University of Texas.  He is a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association, Houston Bar Association, Houston Intellectual Property Law Association and Houston Young Lawyers Association.  Mr. Clark also worked as pro bono counsel for the Houston Volunteer Lawyers Program, providing free legal services to low income residents in the Houston area.

McDermott's Intellectual Property, Media & Technology Department is recognized for its trial and appellate experience.  The practice is ranked as one of the strongest IP litigation firms for both plaintiffs and defendants, and its lawyers are regularly listed among the top practitioners in the U.S. and abroad.  The Firm is also noted for the breadth and depth of its procurement and licensing work in the patent, trademark and copyright arenas.  Rounding out its intellectual property, media and technology services, the team provides client counseling and advice regarding trade secret, unfair competition, advertising, entertainment and computer law.  The department also works closely with McDermott's transactional and tax lawyers at the intersection of IP and corporate issues.
