Prominent Antitrust Lawyer Joins McDermott

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The international law firm of McDermott Will & Emery is pleased to announce that Joseph F. Winterscheid has joined the Firm’s Washington, D.C. office as a partner. For the past 24 years, Mr. Winterscheid has practiced antitrust law with another major international law firm. During that time, he handled major matters in a wide range of industries, including air transport, automotive products, consumer goods, defense, health care, industrial products, pharmaceuticals and specialty metals and fabricated metal products. Among the recent transactions he handled were Johnson Wax Professional’s acquisition of DiverseyLever from Unilever; Alliant Techsystem’s acquisition of Alcoa’s Thiokol unit; and Alliant Techsystem’s acquisition of Boeing Ordnance. He was also on the trial team in Reazin v. Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Kansas. He resided in Brussels from 1989 to 1994, where he opened the Brussels Office of his prior firm, and he continues to represent clients on competition law matters before the European Commission.

His international experience in transactional matters has led Mr. Winterscheid to present testimony to the Federal Trade Commission, the Department of Justice’s International Competition Policy Advisory Committee, and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development on matters relating to international antitrust merger enforcement. He is also a Private Sector Adviser to the FTC/Antitrust Division delegation to the International Merger Notification and Procedures Subgroup of the International Competition Network.

Mr. Winterscheid earned his bachelor’s degree in 1975, summa cum laude, and his J.D. in 1978, magna cum laude, from the University of Notre Dame, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and served as editor-in-chief of the Notre Dame Law Review. He is admitted to practice in Ohio and the District of Columbia.
