McDermott Presents Hospitals With a 'Plan of Action' For Health Care Reform
New “Implementation Checklist” Provides Concise Recommendations Across Major Aspects of New Health Care Reform Law
CHICAGO (August 25, 2010) — In the months since the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was enacted, hospital and health system senior management have been inundated with advisories, articles, and seminars summarizing the provisions of the health care reform law and its cadre of new requirements. But until now, very little has been written explaining exactly what actions hospital and health system executives should evaluate and implement.
Recognizing the need for clear guidance in this area, global law firm McDermott Will & Emery has issued “Health System Reform: An Implementation Checklist for Hospitals.” This guide is designed as a desktop reference for hospital and health system management who are now coming to grips with the most sweeping changes to U.S. health care in a generation. McDermott Will & Emery health lawyers – the team recently ranked “Health Team of the Year” by Chambers USA – have prepared this publication to help make sense of the new health care reform law, and provide specific action steps for health institutions. A copy of the Checklist is available at: http://www.mwe.com/info/healthreformchecklist/.
“In today’s resource-constrained health care environment, it’s not enough to simply describe what the reform law requires hospitals and health systems to do,” observed Michael Peregrine, a partner in McDermott’s Health Industry Practice Group. “Organizations need a clear plan of action in responding to these changes, and that’s what this checklist provides.”
Specifically, the checklist provides senior management with implementation recommendations to address key themes of the health care reform law: fraud and abuse enforcement, insurance reforms, reimbursement, employment matters, tax-exempt status, information technology, corporate governance and, especially, strategic alliances.
“The checklist follows our earlier Health Reform webcast which provided an overview of the Act,” said Eric Zimmerman, a partner in the Firm’s Health Industry Practice Group. “It offers hospitals and health systems the guidance needed to address the various requirements of the legislation and helps navigate this new health care landscape.”
