Addressing the Challenges of Consumer-Driven Health Care

Led by McDermott, Health Industry "Thought Leaders" Provide Recommendations on Consumer-Driven Health Care Challenges in Newly Released White Paper

BOSTON (November 8, 2004) — McDermott Will & Emery is pleased to announce the release of Encouraging a Responsible Approach to Consumer Driven Health Care (CDHC), a white paper which addresses the challenges and provides recommendations for CDHC, one of the fastest growing sectors of the employer-sponsored market.  CDHC programs, currently offered by approximately 20 percent of large employers, shift the responsibility for controllable health-spending choices from the employer to the patient.  CDHC includes high deductible health plans, many of which are coupled with a personal health account, such as a Health Reimbursement Arrangement, Flexible Spending Account or Medical or Health Savings Account, from which employees pay a portion of their medical expenses directly.

The recommendations presented in the white paper reflect consensus points that emerged from discussion among members of McDermott Will & Emery’s Advisory Board on Consumer-Driven Health Care at a colloquium sponsored by McDermott in May of 2004.  The recommendations aim to promote the original goal of CDHC programs—reducing employer/system costs while improving the health status of consumers.
