Top Trial Lawyer Joins McDermott

WASHINGTON, D.C.  — Bobby R. Burchfield, a nationally renowned trial lawyer, has announced he is joining McDermott Will & Emery LLP’s Washington, D.C. office as a member of the Trial Department. Mr. Burchfield will head the department’s Complex Litigation Practice and will join Timothy Waters as the co-partner-in-charge of the Firm’s Washington, D.C. office.

“Bobby has tried numerous cases before juries, judges, government agencies and arbitral tribunals,” said Robert Bouma, head of the Firm’s Trial Department.  “His national reputation, proven success in litigation and his leadership will be major contributions to the strength of our Trial Department.”

Mr. Burchfield, also an accomplished appellate lawyer, was previously the co-chair of Covington & Burling's Litigation Group.  He argued before the United States Supreme Court on behalf of the Republican National Committee and other political parties in their constitutional challenge to the McCain-Feingold campaign finance law, McConnell v. Federal Election Commission.  In addition, he has had principal responsibility for securities defense for a large foreign multinational, a major  financial services company and a large energy company; antitrust defense  for major clients in the airline and chemical industries as well as, a large membership association; RICO defense for a national health care corporation; and corporate takeover defense for a publicly traded telecommunications industry client.

Mr. Burchfield was recently named by the Legal Times as one of the top trial lawyers in the Washington, D.C. area (Legal Times, June 16, 2003), is highly rated by Chambers USA (2004 ed.) and is listed in The Best Lawyers in America.  In 1992, he served as General Counsel of President George H. Bush's re-election campaign.  He also served as the president of the Wake Forest Alumni Association, and currently serves on both the Wake Forest University Board of Trustees and the Board of Advisers at The George Washington University Law School.
