Bruce J. Berman Named to Florida Supreme Court Committee
MIAMI (October 3, 2005) — Bruce J. Berman, a trial partner in McDermott Will & Emery’s Miami office, was re-appointed by the Chief Justice of the Florida Supreme Court to continue his tenure on the Court's Committee on Standard Jury Instructions in Civil Cases beyond the normal two-year term limit. Mr. Berman has, among other things, been leading the work of the Committee on its "Plain English" initiative through his chairmanship, over the last few years, of a subcommittee devoted to the modification of current instructions to enhance juror comprehension. Part of the product of that effort was illustrated by the Committee's recent publication for comment of comprehensively revised preliminary instructions for both pre- and post-voir dire stages of trial.
Mr. Berman was previously appointed by the Supreme Court of Florida to its Workgroup on Public Records, and before that, to its Court Reporter Certification Planning Committee. He was a two-term past chair of The Florida Bar's Civil Procedure Rules Committee, on which he served for 20 years, and a past chair of The Florida Bar's Rules of Judicial Administration Committee, on which he served for 14 years. Mr. Berman is also the author of Florida Civil Procedure, a treatise published annually by West Group since 1998 as part of its Florida Practice Series.
Mr. Berman's practice encompasses a broad range of commercial disputes, in federal and state trial and appellate courts and in U.S. and international arbitration tribunals, involving substantive areas of law including corporate, federal and state securities, health law and intellectual property, among others.
Mr. Berman is a member of The Florida Bar, and is admitted to practice before the U.S. District Courts for the Middle and Southern Districts of Florida, the U.S. Court of Appeals, and the U.S. Supreme Court. He earned his J.D. from Boston University School of Law, his M.B.A. from Columbia University and his B.A. from Williams College.
