McDermott Partner Only Lawyer Appointed to New York Tax Reform Commission
NEW YORK (April 20, 2005) — McDermott Will & Emery is pleased to announce that Peter Faber, a tax partner in the Firm's New York office, has been appointed by New York Governor George G. Pataki to the New York State Commission on Tax Reform and Simplification. Mr. Faber is the only lawyer appointed to the Commission, which is populated by economists.
Lawrence Kudlow, CEO of Kudlow & Company and co-host of CNBC's Kudlow & Cramer, will chair the seven-member commission, which was first announced by the Governor in his State of the State address in January. The Commission will examine New York's tax rates, the number of taxes, incidents of taxation and overall complexity and will propose changes to New York's tax code to make it fairer, simpler and friendlier. The Commission is expected to make its recommendations to the Governor by the fall.
Other members of the Commission include Stephen J. Entin, president and executive director at the Institute for Research on the Economics of Taxation; Dr. Stephen Kagann, chief economist to the Governor; Dr. Charles I. Plosser, Distinguished Professor at the William F. Simon Graduate School of Business at the University of Rochester; John Ryding, chief U.S. economist and managing director at Bear Stearns; and Robert B. Ward, director of research for the Public Policy Institute.
Mr. Faber is a member of the advisory committees of the Tax Departments and the Tax Appeals Tribunals of both New York State and New York City. He previously served as chairman of the American Bar Association Section of Taxation, chairman of the New York State Bar Association Tax Section and regent of the American College of Tax Counsel.
Mr. Faber, partner-in-charge of McDermott's New York tax practice, focuses on corporate and business tax planning and controversy work at the federal, state and local levels. Mr. Faber is frequently consulted by the IRS’s National Office on Tax Matters, particularly in the corporate acquisition area, and his articles have been cited by the courts on numerous occasions. He has also been asked to consult with congressional staffs with respect to proposed legislation and has represented clients on legislative matters.
