Former IRS Official Michael J. Wilder Joins McDermott Will & Emery
WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 23, 2009) — International law firm McDermott Will & Emery is pleased to announce that Michael J. Wilder, formerly a senior lawyer with the Office of Chief Counsel (Corporate) of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), has joined the Firm as a partner in the Tax Department, based in the Washington, DC. office. His practice will focus on major corporate transactions, internal corporate restructuring transactions, consolidated returns and the preservation and utilization of corporate tax attributes, including net operating losses.

Mr. Wilder worked for the IRS for 14 years and served as the Senior Technician Reviewer in Branch 1 of the Office of Chief Counsel (Corporate) since 2001. In this capacity, he reviewed and consulted on guidance projects, technical advice memoranda, private letter rulings, litigation work products and other matters involving corporate tax transactions and issues.
Mr. Wilder has been a longstanding member of the IRS Corporate section 355 committee, comprised of senior attorneys with extensive experience on spin-off transactions, as well as Corporate's troubled companies committee, which considers questions related to insolvency restructurings. Mr. Wilder received a 2008 Chief Counsel National Award for attorney excellence and a performance award each year.
Mr. Wilder earned his J.D. from University of Michigan Law School and his B.A. from Yale University. He is admitted to the District of Columbia bar. He is a chess grandmaster who won the 1988 U.S. National Chess Championship and he was the recipient of other titles and awards as a professional chess player prior to entering law school.
