McDermott Strengthens International Health Care Practice with New Partner in Germany

MUNICH, GERMANY (14 December 2006) — McDermott Will & Emery is further strengthening its international health care practice with the addition of Dr. Stephan Rau from Gibson Dunn & Crutcher LLP, who will join the Munich office as a partner on January 1, 2007.  Along with Dr. Rau, the Munich office is pleased to welcome associate Dr. Andrea Helfrich from Heisse Kursawe.

"Stephan and Andrea will greatly complement our existing U.S. health care practice while expanding our international reach," commented Michael Anthony, head of the Firm's Health Law Department.  "The experience they bring, specifically in the health care and life sciences sectors in Germany, is a significant start to a German-focused health care practice."

Dr. Rau’s practice focuses particularly on health care, in which he advises investors and shareholders on company law and licensing issues.  Dr. Rau advised on the foundation of the first German private medical center.  He has represented numerous laboratories, laboratory equipment manufacturers, radiology groups, hospitals and other investors in corporate restructures and licensing matters.  Dr. Rau speaks regularly at health care conferences and is the author of numerous publications on corporate and licensing issues.

Ms. Helfrich focuses her practice on German and international commercial and corporate law, and cross-border transactions in the health care sector.  She earned an LL.M. in French, European and international corporate law at the Paris-Assas University, and wrote her Ph.D. in Munich und Paris on a legal comparison subject as part of a European scholarship program.

"The addition of these new lawyers expands our German corporate/M&A practice while also establishing a health care practice in Munich," commented Christian von Sydow, partner-in-charge of the Munich office.  "McDermott is a leader in health care in the United States and I am confident that the addition of Stephan and Andrea will lay the building blocks for a further extension of our firm-wide international health care practice."
