UK Employment Alert No. 155: Employment Law Changes Taking Effect in October 2008

The key changes that employers should be aware of are as follows:
With effect from 1 October 2008
- The national minimum wage will rise to £5.73 per hour for adults.
- The requirements for displaying an employer's liability insurance certificate change. From today it is sufficient to make an electronic copy available which employees can access, rather than having to have a hard copy on display.
With effect from 5 October 2008
- Women whose expected week of childbirth is on or after 5 October 2008 will have the same rights during ordinary and additional maternity leave. Women on additional maternity leave will also be entitled to the benefit of all terms and conditions of employment, except remuneration. See Employment Alert No. 153 for further information.
With effect from 27 October 2008
- The requirement for an agency worker to have at least a three month contract before becoming entitled to SSP is abolished.
