Brownfields Redevelopment
We assist clients on significant Brownfields development projects throughout the United States and abroad. Our clients include U.S. and foreign multinational corporations, real estate developers, industrial companies, retail companies, investment trusts and funds, and consulting and other firms in the business of Brownfields redevelopment. In addition, our lawyers pioneered the U.S. Department of Energy's "Brightfields" program, which was launched in Chicago in 1999 to site solar panel manufacturing factories on urban Brownfields.
Our lawyers have authored or contributed to numerous publications relevant to Brownfields projects. These include The Law of Hazardous Waste: Management, Cleanup, Liability, and Litigation, which contains an extended discussion of state Brownfields programs, and Brownfields Law and Practice: The Cleanup and Development of Contaminated Land, both published by Matthew Bender & Co., Inc. Both these treatises are recognized as leading works in their fields.
Because Brownfields projects require close coordination between the legal and technical members of the development team, we employ our own staff hydrogeologist and environmental engineer. These individuals have many years of experience in assisting lawyers and technical consultants to address the many mixed questions of law and environmental science and engineering that arise in Brownfields projects, as well as in evaluating and utilizing emerging technologies for site testing and cleanup.
