Response to 9/11 Tragedy

McDermott Will & Emery, in its role as General Counsel to the American Hotel & Lodging Association, Hotel Association of New York City and the Travel Business Roundtable, was immediately involved in the recovery effort and continues to be involved. Our lawyers assisted those properties in lower Manhattan most directly hit by the attack, advised specific hotels and the industry in general with respect to the unprecedented governmental demands for guest information, advised the industry as to the requirements of the U.S. Patriot Act, assisted in lobbying efforts on the federal and state level, and, as an institution, raised significant funds to help those citizens of New York and Washington, D.C. most in need of emergency assistance.

The long term effects of 9/11 on the industry are both permanent and unpredictable. The competitive structure of the industry has changed. The federal and state governments, in need of funding, are increasing tax scrutiny. Recent corporate responsibility initiatives have increased scrutiny on the industry. McDermott Will & Emery is involved on all levels of this changing scenery.
