International Private Client

Our Private Client Department is unique among U.S. law firms.   With more than 40 lawyers, most of whom are in the Chicago office, we have one of the largest and most highly regarded private client practices in the country.  The American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, an invitation-only organization of private client lawyers, has selected 13 of our partners for membership.  Henry Christensen III, the New York-based head of our international practice, is president-elect of the International Academy of Estate and Trust Law.  The 2006 and 2007 editions of Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business ranked our wealth management practice in the top tier nationwide.  McDermott is the only firm in the United States with three lawyers ranked in the top tier in the wealth management area in Chambers USA 2007

Our Firm’s private client practice encompasses all aspects of wealth transfer for business owners, corporate executives and wealthy family groups.   We work with individuals and trusts that together constitute some of the largest U.S. fortunes, both new and old.  We also represent many successful entrepreneurs with both private and public companies.  Unlike many traditional trusts and estate practices, the estate planning part of our practice is a transactional practice—we routinely engage in intra-family and charitable wealth transfers that involve sums similar to corporate transactions.  We have clients in many different states and countries, and our lawyers regularly travel to meet with clients all over the world.

Our Firm’s international private client practice, run from New York in coordination with the Chicago, Los Angeles, Munich and London offices, represents many wealthy families from around the world, and specializes in multinational tax and trust planning and the organization and reorganization of closely held companies.   Our Firm’s strong international tax practice complements our international private client practice, as do our corporate, litigation and intellectual property practices.  Our London and Munich partners’ experience in private client, international tax and related areas also complements the U.S. side of our international private client practice.

Both our domestic and international private client lawyers have a substantial tax dispute practice.

Members of our international private client practice regularly provide advice and counsel to the following kinds of clients:

  • Foreign nationals investing in the United States, or who have U.S. resident family members
  • U.S. citizens living abroad
  • Noncitizens residing in the United States who need to plan transfers and income taxes on a year-to-year basis
  • U.S. citizens residing in the United States who have noncitizen spouses and foreign beneficiaries
  • U.S. citizens and residents who are beneficiaries of foreign trusts and will receive gifts and inheritances from noncitizens
  • Fiduciaries of foreign trusts with U.S. citizen and resident beneficiaries
