Mentoring & Tutoring
As part of its Kids First Initiative, McDermott Will & Emery's lawyers and staff dedicate countless hours to mentoring and tutoring students in schools located in some of the poorest communities in the United States and abroad.
In 2001, McDermott established its Partners in Reading program, a Firm-wide volunteer tutoring program focused on helping elementary school children in inner-city schools develop reading and grammar skills. Each week, more than 100 McDermott lawyers and non-lawyers take the time to teach young disadvantaged children invaluable academic skills. As part of our Partners in Reading program, McDermott also hosts holiday parties and social activities for the children. The Washington, D.C. office, for example, hosts an annual picnic at Glen Echo Park for the students at Amidon-Bowen Elementary School and spends an afternoon playing on the playground and consuming pizza and cupcakes.
The Miami office hosts its annual Halloween party for the children at Riverside Elementary School and supplies the children with tons of treats, stickers and glow sticks and participates in several activities and crafts The Chicago office hosts its annual holiday party for the children at William H. Brown Elementary School, during which Santa Claus makes an appearance and provides the children with copies of books and learning tools to continue to promote and encourage literacy.
Through the Center for Companies that Care's "Aim High" program, McDermott lawyers and staff mentor high school students with a focus on encouraging the students to graduate from high school, attend college and gain valuable skills to succeed in the workplace. Through the Griffith Tutoring Group, McDermott provides ACT tutoring to at-risk high school students in Chicago as a means to increase their standardized test scores. McDermott is also a sponsor of the Cristo Rey Corporate Work Study Program, in which the Firm employs high school interns to expose them to the various administrative and management aspects of the legal industry.
